House of Hope

A Brief History of the House of hope Association, services and objectives.

The House of Hope was started in 1962 by a blind lady called May lad’a and her assistant Christin Daoud. The services provided to them were restricted to blind people of both sexes and aged 12 years and older. The Association rented sometimes houses in Beit Jala and the other in Bethlehem. They offer for the Blind home services, psychosocial services, health care and profession teaching by teaching them some traditional productions such as such as rattan and bamboo baskets, straw industry and nylon chairs industry in addition to rugs and doormats industry and the teaching of weaving to the blind.

The Association has been able to buy an old building with the land around in the current location in 1975, where they were building two new at the same site and there was a widening to accommodate more blind people of all ages, including students of the Blind that the association helped to complete their higher studies in schools and universities around the capital in Bethlehem. Currently, there are six blind residents in the association, including students with special needs training in their own care center in the association, including those working in the blind workplace.

At the beginning of 1986 a special education school has been opened for children with special needs in the Association where they were accommodating children with special needs of both sexes between the ages of 6-15 years, where they were taught the basic daily skills and self-reliance.

And currently, resides in the inner section 15 children and adults, mostly social issues at the Social Affairs with special needs, and local teachers take care of them besides unpaid foreign volunteers. There is a list of long social situations registered waiting for admission to the inner section of the association.

Services provided by the Association to the beneficiaries currently:

1. Residency services include residency & eating, drinking, health care for both blind sexes from the age of 10 years and above and children with special needs from the age of 6-16 years includes coming from the camps and cities and far villages in Bethlehem, Hebron, Ramallah, Nablus and Tulkarm cases.

2. educational services with the children of a simple-to-moderate degree of disability (susceptible to education and training) and to train them on the basic daily skills such as self-care, table manners and the development of necessary behavioral and social concepts in addition to sports, language and cognitive skills by teaching them reading, writing and arithmetic in accordance with the degree of mental disability they have.

3. Professional Services for the Blind to be trained and employed for the manufacture of brooms and brushes of all sizes in their blind workshop.

4. Cognitive services for the blind to read and write Braille and to be trained on the movement and autonomy for those related with.

 

The association funding:

The association depends in its support and continuity in achieving its objectives on individual and institutional donations from abroad, and reap some of the premiums from parents of children with special needs, as some families cannot afford to pay the installments on their children because of the difficult economic situation, as the House of hope Association suffers currently of difficult economic conditions due to the global financial crisis, which impacted negatively on the financial situation of the association.
