The holy anointing

Since long, my father was using the holy anointing oil,

and after I got to know the Lord Jesus Christ as a personal Savior to my life, I started learning and searching and studying what is related to the holy anointing which is from God.

My brother and my sister let's go together in a short trip between the Old and New Testaments to realize how important is the spiritual anointing, and to get to know together the first anointed man on earth?

In fact, without any doubt, the first anointed known throughout history is: our teacher the Lord Jesus Christ to him all the glory and the lordship! “The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the broken hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound”( Isaiah 61:1).

In this holy anointing, it was in the mind of God from all eternity. As in the book of Proverbs “From everlasting I was established, from the beginning, from the earliest times of the earth.” (Proverbs 8:23)

Holy anointing was used in a survey of the house of God in the inauguration of Jacob for the first house of God in history as mentioned in (Genesis 28: 10-19)

St. Peter has shown us the anointing in his saying:

How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.(Acts of the Apostles 10:38)

“God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness beyond your companions.” (Hebrews 1: 9)

And In order to achieve this prophecy that appeared in the psalm. (Psalm 44)

Here, dear reader, the anointing: the thing which anoints, the good or the fragrant smell, is also called the oil of joy, where the good word has repeated more than twenty times in the Bible.

According to my studies and my researches, the anointing is in three forms or main types, namely:

1. The anointing of the Holy Spirit as mentioned in several verses such as in the sacred:

“But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth”. (1 John 2:20)

“Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He anointed us” (II Corinthians 1:21).

“God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness beyond your companions.” (Hebrews 1: 9).

2. The anointing of kings, priests and prophets

As he mentioned in the Book of Exodus (30: 30) (Leviticus 8:30) (1 Kings 19:15).

For example: When Samuel Daoud survey as king. (1 Samuel 13:16).

3. The anointing of the Sick, as stated in the Epistle of James “Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord.” (James 5:14)

Interestingly, in the Book of Exodus, to Moses, the Lord describes the installation of the holy anointing oil.

“²² The Lord said to Moses, ²³ “Take the finest spices: of liquid myrrh 500 shekels, and of sweet-smelling cinnamon half as much, that is, 250, and 250 of aromatic cane, ²⁴ and 500 of cassia, according to the shekel of the sanctuary, and a hin[e] of olive oil. ²⁵ And you shall make of these a sacred anointing oil blended as by the perfumer; it shall be a holy anointing oil. ²⁶ With it you shall anoint the tent of meeting and the ark of the testimony, ²⁷ and the table and all its utensils, and the lampstand and its utensils, and the altar of incense, ²⁸ and the altar of burnt offering with all its utensils and the basin and its stand. ²⁹ You shall consecrate them, that they may be most holy. Whatever touches them will become holy. ³⁰ You shall anoint Aaron and his sons, and consecrate them, that they may serve me as priests.” (Exodus 22:30 -33).

And the oil was mixed with the certain parts of the previous perfumes mentioned, and when he wipes the person or the place with oil the smell comes out with it.

Here, dear reader, I am pleased to put some examples from the Bible that shows us how intrinsic and spiritual significance is the anointing oil:

• Saul son of Kish: Then Samuel took a flask of olive oil and poured it on Saul’s head and kissed him, saying, “Has not the Lord anointed you ruler over his inheritance? (Samuel 10: 1)

“Anoint them just as you anointed their father, so they may serve me as priests. Their anointing will be to a priesthood that will continue throughout their generations.”

• David the son of Jesse: (1 Samuel 16:13)

• Solomon the son of David: (1 kings 1:32)

• Elia wiped Elisha by his mantle to replace the Holy Spirit upon (1 Kings 19)

• The anointing of Jehu the son of Nimshi: Rehoboam appointed Abijah son of Maakah as crown prince among his brothers, in order to make him king. (2 Chronicles 11:22)

• Hazael king over Aram: (1 Kings 15:19)

• Jehu the son of Nimshi king over Israel: (1 Kings 16:19)

The oil in the bible is a symbol for the Holy Spirit. And this reason made this oil like nothing else because it is made with the best elements to be a holy oil.

And this oil is not for any human being it is only for Jesus that none is alike. It is a great symbol for the lord Jesus and the chief priest. That is why it is called a crown of anointing oil and it refers to the shrine of the great royal priesthood of Christ.
