Do you know how to disappear?

Get alone with God.

Arabic

It’s hard to hide these days. Even when we’re alone, our friends can still find us if we keep our phones switched on. Some of mine get anxious if I don’t respond to messages straight away.

So, we have to learn how to disappear.

That’s what Jesus and his disciples did in Mark 9:30-31. The passage says: ‘They left that place and passed through Galilee. Jesus did not want anyone to know where they were, because he was teaching his disciples.’

He wanted to tell them about his forthcoming death. Sadly, they didn’t understand him, and it led to an argument when they came out of hiding and travelled to Capernaum.

But Jesus still created the opportunity to spend time alone with them. Other times he took Peter James and John to be with him. It was fundamental to their training.

He also hid so he could spend time with his Father. Mark 1:35-36 describes how he got up early to a solitary place to pray. Simon and his companions went to look for him, and when they found him, they exclaimed: “Everyone is looking for you!”

Jesus sometimes wants to be alone with us, without anyone knowing where we are. And we’ll miss important teaching unless we join him. That might mean going out and leaving our phones behind.
