A sad state
When you read the Old Testament you see that the Holy Spirit could come upon a person but could also leave.
Saul when he sinned it tells us that the spirit of God left him.
In the New Testament Jesus said that he was going to send someone who would be a comforter, He would be in you forever.
When you became a believer in Jesus, God deposited his Holy Spirit inside of you.
Today as a bible believing Christian God's spirit lives inside of you and he will remain inside of you forever.
In the Old Testament the Holy Spirit would leave but in the New Testament he will stay.
But when we get into sin we can grieve the Holy Spirit.
The Bible says that our bodies are a temple of the Holy Spirit.
God's spirit lives inside of us.
So when we do something foolish like have sex with someone out of marriage then we are bringing the Holy Spirit into that unholy union.
That is when we grieve the spirit. Or quench the spirit.
God's Holy Spirit is a fire within us but when we do something wrong like sex out of marriage we quench his Holy Spirit inside of us.
It is like pouring water on a fire.
God's Holy Spirit never leaves us, but we dampen the fire inside of us because of that sin, We grieve the Holy Spirit.
Today ask God for a fresh fire, ask him to rekindle the flame.
And keep your eyes focused on him.
